A dental implant is an appliance used to replace the roots of teeth. Predominantly made from titanium as it is strong, durable and biocompatible, implants are surgically attached to the jaw bone and an artificial tooth is attached to the top of the implant, creating a natural looking, undetectable replacement for the missing tooth.
In the event that more than one tooth is missing, several implants may provide a base for a series of artificial teeth known as a fixed bridge.
Implants can even be used to secure a full set of removable dentures for people who have no remaining natural teeth. This can greatly improve chewing ability and reduce the risk of choking.
Once the site for the implant has been sterilised, the implant is placed and left for a couple of months to heal and bond with the surrounding ligaments and bone. Treatment phases
Prior to receiving your dental implants our dentists will conduct a thorough oral and general health examination, a detailed set of x-rays may also be required, from which we will develop with you a comprehensive treatment plan. The First Step
Under a local anaesthetic and with clinical precision, the procedure involves making a minor incision in your gum-line and your implant being gently guided into its pre-determined position. The incision is closed with a few stitches. Many patients report little to no discomfort and return to work and their normal routine the following day. If you experience any discomfort after the anaesthetic has worn off, an over the counter pain relief medication can be taken.
The Second Step
Dependant upon your personal situation, a replacement crown or bridge may be placed at the same time you receive your implant, or temporary teeth may be placed whilst your implant bonds with your jawbone, this may take between three to six months.
The Third and Final Step
After your implant has fused with your jawbone it is uncovered and an attachment referred to as an abutment is secured. It is to this abutment that your replacement teeth are permanently bonded. Dental implants function, feel and are indistinguishable from your natural teeth
A thorough oral hygiene routine is just as important for your implant as it is for your natural teeth. Even though your implant is titanium and your replacement teeth are made from high-grade porcelain, your surrounding teeth and gum tissue is still vulnerable to gum disease. It is therefore recommended to schedule check-up appointments every six months to ensure your implant and natural teeth remain in perfect health.
